Welcome to the 6th Annual Mychal’s Learning Place Bowl-A-Thon!

Thank you to all of our supporters for coming out to raise money and awareness for children with developmental disabilities. Mychal’s Learning Place opened its doors in July 2002 in Hawthorne, California. Mychal’s Learning Place provides after school programs for children with developmental disabilities such as Autism, Down syndrome, Cerebral Palsy to name a few. The activities that we provide are Karate, Bowling, Dance and Movement Therapy, Yoga, Music Therapy, Art Therapy, Life Skills training and more.

Mychal’s Learning Place is named after my daughter Mychal who passed away June 2, 1996 at 7 ½ years of age of an undiagnosed neurological disorder. Mychal is by far my inspiration in life and what I do. I opened Mychal’s Learning Place to honor her and give children with special needs a safe and loving place to come and be challenged to succeed and to encourage independence and build self esteem.

Around the age of 12 or 13, many normal developing children have options for after school activities, whether it be sports, drama or to simply go home and wait for their family to arrive. Our children do not have these options. Most of our children can not be left home alone for many reasons, safety being the biggest.

Not only does Mychal’s Learning Place give families the added security and peace of mind to know that their child is safe, it also allows our families to maintain gainful employment.

What are the costs to our families?
There is no cost to our families, 90% of our families would not be able to afford a program that provides the scope of activities that we do. How does Mychal’s Learning Place cover it’s costs? The Regional Center’s of California provide us with approximately 80% of our funding, the rest is raised through grant writing, corporate donations, fundraising events, in kind donations and donations from individuals.

What can you do?
Whether you want to volunteer, host a fundraising event, provide in kind donations or make a financial contribution. Any and all donations are needed and appreciated. Mychal’s Learning Place is a 501(c) 3 corporation and your donations are tax deductible to the extent of the law.

Where will your donation go?
Your donation will assist us with continuing to provide new and enriching activities to more children. We opened up our second location in Culver City, California on Monday, April 3, 2006. This could not have been made possible with out the help and support of our board of directors, our dedicated staff and supporters like you.
