About the Event
Ahoy Mateys! This year’s charity event is a pirate-themed fundraiser benefitting our local disadvantaged children. Arrrgh! A perfect excuse to have a blast and raise some doubloons for these kids. Bowling is just part of the fun. Keep scrolling for information on prizes, drawings, the famous Captain Jack’s appearance, the best photo booth in Chicagoland, and more. The Benefit Bowling Blast is once again brought to you by the Buns Care Charity and its Sisterhood Chapter.

Carouse with Captain Jack! This guy is amazing! He will be working the crowd and making himself available for photos around the lanes and at the photo booth. Behave yourself or you may be subject to a flogging!
SIGN UP. DRESS UP. SHOW UP. HAVE A BLAST!
GOOD BOWLERS. LOUSY BOWLERS. EVEN NON-BOWLERS. Put together a team of 4, 5, or 6. If you don’t have enough for a full team, no problem. Go ahead and sign up just 1, 2, or 3 bowlers and we’ll pull it all together. We have reserved all 48 lanes. Room for over 200 bowlers. But this event always fills up fast, so do not delay. Get to work on your team today and register by AUGUST 3rd!
The registration fee is a paltry $25 per person. Each bowler gets:
- 3 hours of bowling and shoe rental
- Food, soft drinks, coffee, and dessert
- A cash bar with plenty of beer, cheap rum and other spirits
- A pirate-themed event T-shirt (register by July 30 or you may not get a bloody t-shirt)
- Professional team, group, and individual photos by Laughbooth
- A chance to win some great prizes
- Buy into a 50/50 drawing (our last pot paid out $600!)
- Bid on a wide variety Silent Auction items
Our goal is to raise $17,000 this year thru event sponsorships, raffles, and individual donations. Bowlers can help us meet the goal by simply asking your friends, employers, co-workers, and other landlubbers to donate just a few dollars in support of you, under your name or your team’s name. Easy to do it on this website via credit card or PayPal. Let them know that all proceeds will remain in our community. And blimey! We almost forgot. The 2 teams with the most donated to them will win prizes!

Go all out and DRESS UP like a Pirate, Lady Pirate or Wench
Although it’s not required, dressing up will really add to the atmosphere and make for some great photo opportunities while bowling and in the photo booth. There’s plenty of time to get some pirate garb together. The best costumes will win prizes worth over $400!
This is a Kid-Friendly Event
Register them too. Dress up the scallywags and drag them along if you like. There will be prizes for the best Lad and Lassie costumes. The kids always enjoy posing in the photo booth and plundering the huge Striker’s Arcade, but if the little brats act up too much the Captain may have them walk the plank!

- 50/50 Drawing ($1 tickets) – Our last Benefit Bowling Blast had a $1200 pot! Some lucky pirate or wench will be taking home a sweet booty
- Silent Auction – Everyone will have a chance to drop $1 tickets in a bid box to bid on some of the wide assortment of fantastic items displayed on the auction tables. We always have well over 50 great items in the auction, ranging in value from $25 to $250 or more
Recycle eWaste for Free Auction Tickets!
- KEEP eWASTE OUT OF LANDFILLS! Get 5 FREE $1 auction tickets for each undamaged cell phone, tablet, or iPad (these are the only electronics we will be accepting at the event). Drop the off at the Sisterhood Table and the ladies will properly recycle them to help fund their Free PreK-at-Home program.
- They also accept and recycle ink cartridges, but they won’t get you any free tickets.
How to Participate
Step One: Register to Bowl (3 Options)
- Preregister by AUGUST 3rd to be assured of receiving a custom event t-shirt!
- Become a Team Captain and CREATE A TEAM. Come up with a creative team name. Add your name to the team. Invite people to register as part of your team.
- JOIN A TEAM that is expecting you.
- SIGN UP AS AN INDIVIDUAL and we will create a team for you or find a place on a team.
- Best way to pay (easiest for you and for us) is online when you register. Credit card, Debit card, or PayPal. Or you can pay by mail (Include a check with the Bowler/Team Mail-in Form).
Step Two (optional): WIN PRIZES by Soliciting Donations
- Win part of $350 worth of prizes!
- Try to raise at least $30 per bowler. When you hit $30, go for more! Ask a few friends for $10 or $20 in support. You’ll be surprised at how easy it is. Keep asking more friends!
- Be sure to let everyone know that their donations are tax deductible.
- Start early! Don’t wait until the last minute. It is never too early.
- Ask everyone you know to support you as a bowler and help the cause. Have them make donations on behalf of you or your team securely online with a credit card or debit card in advance of the event.
- In addition to in-person requests, send out some emails explaining why you are bowling and ask them to support you and the kids by making any size contribution. Include a link to the “Donate” page. This is a painless alternative and can bring in a surprising amount of donations.
Step Three: Show Up
- 4:45 to 5:45 pm – Arrive at Stardust III in Dyer to check in, get your t-shirt, shoes and lane assignment. If possible (unless you are in full costume) please put on your event t-shirt at the bowling alley.
- 6-10 pm – Have a Blast!

What the Charity Does
Kids Shoe Drive
In first 4 years of our Kids Shoe Drive the Buns Care Charity was able to provide over 2000 pair ($30,000 value) of new shoes to some of Lake County’s underprivileged children. We accomplish this by setting up more than 20 business collection locations throughout the county, making it convenient for anyone to drop off a pair or two. The generosity of the community and the cooperation of local businesses greatly contribute to the success of this event. The Kids Shoe Drive runs for one week each year, beginning on #GivingTuesday, the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. This year’s event will begin on November 30 and run thru December 6.
Education Assistance
FREE PreK-at-HOME PROGRAM -The Charity’s Sisterhood Chapter works at raising awareness to the importance of preschool education. The ladies of the Sisterhood help families with out the means to afford traditional preschool be able to give their kids a chance to excel upon entering Kindergarten. They provide some basic guidance and a professional teaching kit at no charge. The kits are full of hands-on exercises and require only 15-20 minutes per day of dedicated interaction between a child and parent or caregiver. CLICK HERE to learn more.
SCHOLARSHIPS.
Every spring the Charity gives out scholarships to deserving local high school seniors. This year we’re blessed to be able to present SIX $1000 checks to students from Calumet New Tech HS (2), Andrean HS (1), Lake Central HS (2), and Griffith HS (1). Four of this year’s recipients are pictured here. CONGRATULATIONS!
LITTLE FREE PRE-K LIBRARY
PreK books are available in front of the Charity’s office at 825 W 45th St in Griffith. Bring your little one and borrow a book or two, any time, day or night.
