About Our Organization
Seniors in Service engages vibrant and experienced volunteers to enrich Northern Nevada communities one life at a time. There are three programs managed through Seniors in Service serving Northern Nevada:
The Foster Grandparent Program – This program places senior volunteers, 55 years and older, in supervised settings within K-12 schools, public agencies, family drug court, juvenile detention, etc. with the goal of helping at-risk children meet academic standards as well as providing positive intergenerational social interaction. This program is part of the federal network of Senior Corps programs and is sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service. Volunteers must meet certain eligibility requirements and must pass federal and state background checks.
The Senior Companion Program – Senior Companion volunteers are 55 years and provide basic social support to seniors over the age of 60 who live alone (or are in need of respite care), have limited access to outside resources, and who will benefit most from social support such as visiting, playing games, assisting with accessing supportive resources, etc. Services may include taking clients to medical appointments, grocery shopping, and other relevant errands where transportation reimbursement funding permits. This program is also a Senior Corps Program and is sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service and the State of Nevada’s Aging and Disability Services Division.
The Seniors in Service Respite Voucher Program – This program is a grant-funded respite voucher service to live-in caregivers who are in need of a break. For those who qualify, a voucher of $1000 may be available. Those served are live-in caregivers of persons over the age of 60 who need assistance in most activities of daily living and are a safety risk if left alone. This program is sponsored by the State of Nevada Aging and Disability Services Division. Qualifications and restrictions apply.
